Mid-Atlantic Undergraduate Research Conference Winners Announced

West Virginia Wesleyan hosted the thirteenth annual Mid-Atlantic Undergraduate Research Conference in March with over 18 student presentations representing a variety of academic disciplines including mathematics, natural sciences, sociology, literature, and original works of creative writing. Each of the winning presenters received a cash prize.

Dr. Molly Clever, assistant professor of sociology, delivered the message on “Justifying Terror through Emotional Legacies.”

Under the Humanities and Social Sciences, Erin Hudnell of Ansted, earned first place with her presentation, “Gendered Experiences of Women in the Holocaust,” for Psychology and Sociology.

Jessica Nelson of Morgantown, won second place with the presentation of “Male Hysteria as a Result of Sexual Repression: a Freudian and Queer Analysis of Edgar Allan Poe’s ‘The Fall of the House of Usher,’” in English-Writing.

Placing third place was Kirsten Reneau of Grafton, presenting “My Boyfriend Broke Up With Me in Geology Class,” in English-Writing and Gender Studies with a Specialization in American History.

Under Natural Sciences, Chloe Bland of Dunmore, Rebecca Davis of Mechanicsburg, PA, and Rebekah Honce of Bridgeport, presented “Exposure to Sodium Selenite Decreases Overall Activity and Feeding Behavior in the Allegheny Crayfish, Orconectes obscurus,” from the biology department.

Aaron Weaver of Morgantown placed second place with his presentation “Alkali Spectroscopy,” from the Physics and Engineering department.

Corey Rhodes of Seneca Rocks placed third place with his presentation of “Tesla Coils and Their Audio Playback Applications,” in the Physics and Engineering department.

Wesleyan began hosting the Mid-Atlantic Undergraduate Research Conference when organizer, philosophy professor Dr. Robert Hull wanted to recognize the efforts of students contributing to academic research before the graduate level.
