Theatre Department to Present Production of Agnes of God

West Virginia Wesleyan College’s Theatre Department will present Agnes of God at the Virginia Thomas Law for the Performing Arts Center (PAC) in the Culpepper Auditorium Thursday-Saturday, February 23-25, at 8 p.m. and Sunday, February 26 at 2 p.m.

Agnes of God is about a woman named Dr. Martha Livingstone, a court-appointed psychiatrist convicted of an accused murder of her newborn child. Both Miriam Ruth and the Mother Superior keeps Agnes from the doctor. This caused Dr. Livingstone to become suspicious. Who killed her newborn child and who fathered the victim? Those questions force the characters to observe the meaning of faith and the power of love.

Agnes of God, by John Pielmeyer and directed by Gregory Mach, associate professor of dramatic arts, was first performed at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center in Waterford, Connecticut in 1979. The first play starred the actresses Jacqueline Brooks, Jo Henderson, and Dianne Wiest, making appearances in Louisville in 1980, Broadway in 1982, and London in 1983. It was also shot into a movie starring actresses Jane Fonda, Anne Bancroft, and Meg Tilly

The performance will include two casts. The first cast will be performing on February 23 at 8 p.m. and February 25 at 8 p.m. Sarah Smith of Bristol, WV will be playing the role of Agnes; Anne Wilson of Elkins, WV as the role of Mother Miriam Ruth; and Katlin Kouns of Cross Lanes, WV as Dr. Livingstone.

The second cast will be holding their performances on February 24 at 8 p.m. and February 26 at 2 p.m. Annika Naylor of Oakland, MD will be playing the role of Agnes; Karly Hunt of  Parkersburg, WV as Mother Miriam Ruth; and Maya Eberhart of Brooklyn, NY as Dr. Livingstone.

“This is a really smart play that explores themes of obsession and regaining something dear to us that we lost in the past,” said Mach. “The play made a huge splash when it came out, and I think our audiences will see why. It has a lot for us to think about in our times and is one of the best intellectual thrillers ever written.

“The play only has three characters, all women, and I wanted to give more opportunities to our actors, so I decided to do the show with two alternating casts with the help of directors, Charles Harper (Silver Spring, MD) and Logan Darnell (Danville, WV),” continued Mach. “It will be exciting to see how the two shows will present the material in different ways because of the different characterizations”

Mach teaches advanced acting, directing, theatre history, stage makeup, voice and movement, and humanities. He has also performed different performances such as Shakespeare and even miming. He has made many performances in the southeast part of the United States and also made appearances on television. Mach directs at least one show at Wesleyan every semester.

Tickets will be available at the PAC. The show is $7 for general admissions, $5 for seniors, and $3 for the College community. For more information about the Agnes of God, please contact Mach at
