President’s Medal Will be Awarded to Ben Exley IV

The West Virginia Wesleyan College’s President’s Medal will be awarded to Ben Exley IV of Wheeling, retired executive director of the West Virginia Independent Colleges and Universities (WVICU) from 2010-2016, during the Emeritus Club dinner on Friday, December 9 on the Buckhannon campus.  The medal is awarded to individuals who have made significant contributions to Wesleyan and higher education.

As the executive director of WVICU, he was responsible for all operations of the organization, as well as the Annual Scholarship Campaign, though which he garnered support for the Circle of Vision Scholarship Program. Prior to serving as the executive director, Exley was a WVICU Board member from 1999-2008 and held several officer positions including Board Chair.  He also enjoyed a successful career in marketing, public relations, and sales.  He served as the executive vice president of James Communications, interim executive director for the Ohio Valley Industrial and Development Corporation, Mid-Atlantic regional vice president of Cardinal Health, and president and CEO of Ohio Valley Clarksburg, Inc.

Exley, a 1968 graduate of Wesleyan, served as a member of the Wesleyan’s Board of Trustees for eight years.  He was also a Board member at The Linsly School, the Valley National Gases and the Ohio Valley Business and Industrial Development Corporation, and several other non-profit organizations.

Exley and his wife, Lynne, have been generous supporters of the College.  They were charter members of the Wesleyan Society and have been members every year since the leadership circle was established in 1995.  The Exleys have contributed to Wesleyan in many other ways including hosting Wheeling area alumni receptions at their home and recruiting new students to the College.

“Ben Exley has dedicated much of his life to furthering the cause of private higher education in West Virginia,” said President Pamela Balch ’71.  “We honor him for his service to private higher education and to West Virginia Wesleyan College.”

There have only been six other recipients since the inception of the President’s Medal in 2000, including Dale Turner ’43 (2000), Doug Miller ’59 (2000), James Knorr ’63 (2007), Jerry Beasley (2008), Frank ’87 and Jane Williams (2010), and Franklin "Hank" Ellis '43.
