Department of Music to Present Evening Concert

The West Virginia Wesleyan College Department of Music will present an Evening of Music on Thursday, October 16 at 7:30 p.m. in the Culpepper Auditorium of the Virginia Thomas Law Center for the Performing Arts.  The concert will kick off Homecoming weekend for the College.

This year’s Evening of Music will feature students, faculty, alumni from the Department of Music, and the campus at large.  Concentus Vocum, under the direction of Dr. R. Daniel Hughes, director of choral activities, will be joined by several alumni and current faculty to perform two movements from Steve Heitzig’s Leaf Songs.  Originally commissioned by Barbara J. McKinnon ’70 “with love and appreciation to her professors and friends from Wesleyan,” the piece will also feature Kayoko Funada on piano and Holden Akers-Toler on percussion.  Funada is a senior applied music major from Saitama, Japan, and Akers-Toler is a junior music education major from Beckley, WV.  The first performance of Leaf Songs was by Wesleyan’s Concert Chorale, under the direction of then-director Larry Parsons, on October 13, 1995.

The evening will also feature additional performances by Funada on piano, Associate Professor of Music Dr. James Moore, and the Wesleyan Jazz Ensemble.
