Dr. Harold T. Elmore Hon. '82 to Retire June 30

Dr. Harold T. Elmore, Hon. ‘82, Emeritus Club coordinator for 20 years in the Office of Alumni Relations, will retire June 30 from West Virginia Wesleyan College.  Chartered in 1962, the Emeritus Club oversees alumni who attended the College 50 or more years ago. In this capacity, he has reached out to thousands of Wesleyan alumni and has been instrumental in securing funding for a number of projects including most recently, the Emeritus Club Lobby in the Virginia Thomas Law Center for the Performing Arts, the Emeritus Club Conference Room in the David E. Reemsnyder Research Center, the renovation of the MRC 200 classroom, and the Emeritus Club International Travel Scholarship.

A former trustee of the College, Dr. Elmore has received several noteworthy awards for his service to the College and the church.  He received the Alumni Council’s Extra Mile Award and Wesleyan’s Rhododendron Award, which honors outstanding West Virginians for their service to the state. In addition to his work with WVWC alumni and his outreach to our United Methodist Church friends, he and his wife, Sylvia have touched the lives of many Wesleyan students and parents.

On May 6 at the annual luncheon, the Emeritus Club officers, directors, past presidents, and members of the Advancement and Alumni Offices recognized Dr. Elmore. He has served with distinction, providing outstanding leadership in this important role for the College since 1996.

In a surprise program, gifts were presented to him and his wife, the former Sylvia Conklyn, in both their honor. Emeritus Club President, Ron McCauley ’59 led the planning for this special recognition of Dr. Elmore’s service to the College. The biggest surprise was the renaming of the Emeritus Club International Travel Scholarship to the Dr. Harold T. Elmore, Hon. ’82 Emeritus Club Endowed Scholarship for International Travel; $24,000 was received for the scholarship that now totals $69,820.95.

A native of Seebert, Pocahontas County, he graduated from Hillsboro High School, Morris Harvey College, Vanderbilt University, and the U.S. Army’s Chaplain School and the Command and General Staff College. He served as a campus pastor at West Virginia University, pastor of churches, as a district superintendent in the West Virginia Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church, and as a member of the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry. A U.S. Army Chaplain, he served on active and reserve duty for thirty-three years, with eleven years as a Colonel, retiring in 1988. He retired from the WV Annual Conference while serving Spruce Street UMC in Morgantown in 1993 with forty-one years of service. He received Wesleyan’s Honorary Doctor of Divinity degree in 1982.

The Elmores have been generous with their time and gifts for Wesleyan. They and their four children: Thomas ’81, Wesley, Heather ’85, and Jonathan and their families have established three endowed scholarships: S. Azo F. Wagner and Vivian Brady Wagner Scholarship, in memory of his uncle and aunt with whom he lived as a college student; Sylvia Conklyn Elmore Elementary Education Scholarship; and Harold Thomas Elmore Scholarship which benefits students from Greenbrier and Pocahontas Counties.
