Dr. Rich Calef Awarded Exemplary Teacher

Dr. Rich Calef, professor of Psychology and chairperson of Psychology Department, received the West Virginia Wesleyan College Award for Exemplary Teaching during the annual Founders Day Convocation on Oct. 16.

The award is presented each year by Wesleyan and the general board of higher education of The United Methodist Church to recognize the accomplishments of an extraordinary teacher.

“Dr. Calef has been described as a great and wonderful teacher who seeks to instill passion in students for the professor’s field of study,” said Dr. Boyd Creasman, vice president for academic affairs and dean of the college.  “A firm believer in undergraduate research, Dr. Calef has co-authored numerous articles with his students during his forty-five years on the faculty.”

A member of the Wesleyan faculty since 1970, Dr. Calef has held his current position since 1980. He teaches courses that range from advanced experimental psychology to biological psychology to psychological experimentation laboratory.

Dr. Calef earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Bridgeport (CT) and his Master of Arts and Ph.D. from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. He and his wife, Ruth, who retired in 2013 from Wesleyan as associate professor psychology, reside in Buckhannon.
