Wesleyan Ranked 38th in Best Value Colleges for Homeschoolers

West Virginia Wesleyan College has been recognized for its excellence for the second time this week in a college ranking publication. The private residential college was included in the 50 Best Value Colleges for Homeschoolers by

Wesleyan was listed 38th on a list that includes prestigious schools such as Amherst College, Harvard University, Michigan University, Stanford University, University of Washington, and Yale University. It was the only West Virginia school listed in the publication.

“We are delighted to be listed as a 50 Best Value College,” stated Wesleyan President Pamela Balch ’71.  “We have a great tradition of providing challenging programs in a supportive atmosphere.  Our association with many of the nation’s most prestigious colleges and universities demonstrates that we have a strong reputation for excellence beyond West Virginia.”

Earlier this week, Wesleyan was ranked 27th by The Washington Monthly College Guide as the best Baccalaureate College in 2014. Washington Monthly Magazine based its rating on Wesleyan’s contribution to the public good in three broad categories: Social Mobility, Research, and Service.

Affiliated with the United Methodist Church, Wesleyan encourages intellectual development, as well as spiritual, ethical, and leadership growth. The school seeks creative and curious minds who can demonstrate responsibility and strong personal character, therefore homeschooled students who have used their freedom to become leaders outside the “classroom” and contribute to service ventures may have a better chance of gaining admittance.

Wesleyan began its academic year on Monday, with an enrollment that is expected to surpass 1,500 students for the first time since 2002. The total includes over 465 new students, the second largest entering class in a decade.  The College is in the process of completing over $7.5 million in construction projects that include the O’Roark Nordstrom Welcome Center and renovations to classrooms, residence halls, the soccer field, and the multi-purpose athletic complex.

West Virginia Wesleyan College offers 47 undergraduate majors including three new offerings, Petroleum and Natural Gas Geophysics, Pre-Drama Therapy, and Social Justice Studies. Graduate programs are offered in athletic training, business administration, education, English creative writing, and nursing.
