The Department of Theatre and Dance Presents "Anne of Green Gables"

The Department of theatre and dance at West Virginia Wesleyan College will present its adaptation of Anne of Green Gables for this spring semester’s performance on March 26-28 in the Culpepper Auditorium in the Virginia Thomas Law Center for Performing Arts. Associate Professor of Theatre Greg Mach will be directing the play based on the book by L.M. Montgomery and original adaptation by Sylvia Ashby.

This new dramatization captures the charm and excitement of L.M. Montgomery’s enduring classic about an orphan girl, Anne Shirley, from her first encounter with her austere guardian to her thrilling graduation from Queen’s Academy. A contemporary telling of the story follows Stern Marilla and her warm-hearted brother Mathew as they hope to adopt a boy to help on their farm. Instead of a boy, the orphanage sends young Anne by mistake, and their lives are never the same. Anne’s warmth and wit affects all around her as the story follows her through her rebellious years, and into her transformation into a young woman.

“We chose this play because L.M. Montgomery’s books have been so popular, and we wanted to offer something this spring that would be entertaining for the whole family,” stated Mach.

The leads casted for the play are as follows: Corinne Weaver of Oakland, MD as Marilla Cuthbert, Logan Darnell of Danville, WV as Mathew Cuthbert, and Sarah Hartman of Madison Heights, VA as the lead of Anne Shirley.

“The cast is a great mix of majors and non-majors, with many stage veterans in large and small roles. I am really looking forward to working with this talented group on such a fun play,” commented Mach.

The adaptation of Anne of Green Gables will be performed from March 26-28, 8 p.m.; 2 p.m. matinee March 28, in the Culpepper Auditorium. Admission is $8 for adults, $5 for seniors and students, $3 for Wesleyan students with ID.
