Winkie Awarded James G. Stemler Study Abroad Scholarship

Colin Winkie, a senior biochemistry major from Bridgeport, WV, has been awarded the James G. Stemler Study Abroad Scholarship in the amount of $1,000 for the 2014-2015 school year.

The James G. Stemler Study Abroad Scholarships are awarded to members of Alpha Lambda Delta who are pursuing a for-credit study abroad program during the upcoming academic year.  Winkie plans to use this scholarship to study at the Semester at Sea program, which is provided through the University of Virginia.  He will be traveling to Norway, Sweden, Finland, Russia Poland, and other countries on a boat that doubles as a school.

“To be considered as one of the 20 recipients in the nation for this award is a feeling like no other,” Winkie commented.  “I did not have high expectations of receiving it.  It was a great start to the summer and increased anticipation to travel the world and experience new cultures.”

The awards are named in honor of Dr. James G. Stemler, who served the National Council of ALD for more than 14 years.  In addition to his dedicated service on the Council, Dr. Stemler was an active chapter advisor for the chapter at the University of Portland and has been a very local proponent and promoter of international study.

Alpha Lambda Delta recognizes that the world is no longer a collection of independent peoples and that today’s society is made up of a global community of world citizens.  There is an immediate need for American students to experience life beyond our borders, and studies abroad are one of the ways in which our colleges and universities are accomplishing that goal.

Founded in 1924 at the University of Illinois by Dean of Women Maria Leonard, Alpha Lambda Delta is a national honor society that recognizes and encourages academic excellence among first year students.  Since its inception, the Society has grown to find homes on over 275 campuses throughout the United States, and has inducted over one million members in its 90-year history.  This year, the Society recognized over 30,000 new members, inviting students who have earned grades in the top 20% of their first-year class.
