WVWC Day Raises over $170,000 for Title III Endowment Challenge

On May 2, West Virginia Wesleyan College challenged its alumni and friends to raise money designated for the Title III Endowment Match.  More than 550 alumni and friends responded with more than $170,000 in donations as part of the one-day initiative.  Named “WVWC Day,” the event coincided with the day high school students across the country announced their college selection.

Wesleyan was awarded the $10 million Title III grant through the Department of Education’s Strengthening Institutions Program in September 2014.  One component of that grant is a $2 million endowment challenge where each gift designated toward “Title III” is matched by the U.S. Federal Government, resulting in a $4 million increase in the College’s endowment over 5 years.  Wesleyan was one of two institutions to receive the $10 million award.  Once the gifts received on WVWC Day are matched dollar-for-dollar, the day will result in a $340,000 investment in Wesleyan’s endowment.

“We are delighted by the tremendous response of our alumni and friends,” said Bob Skinner ’75, vice president for advancement.  “Not only did we far exceed our $100,000 goal, we also experienced a record number of online gifts through this effort.”

In addition to the $10 million grant, Wesleyan is in the midst of a $30 million “Enhancing Our Tradition, Empowering Our Future” Capital Campaign.  The effort has six primary objectives that include current scholarships, the scholarship endowment, capital improvements, academic program support, the renovation of athletic facilities, and the Title III endowment challenge.
