Dr. Susan Leight Recognized with Exemplary Teaching Award

During Founders Day Convocation at West Virginia Wesleyan College’s Homecoming celebration, Dr. Susan Leight, professor and director of the School of Nursing, was presented with the General Board of Higher Education of the United Methodist Exemplary Teaching Award.

The award recognizes faculty members who exemplify excellence in teaching, civility and concern for students and colleagues, commitment to value-centered education, and service to students, the institution, and the community.

“Dr. Leight has demonstrated a deep understanding of how to measure student learning, and this understanding has led to excellent teaching over the last twelve years,” said Boyd Creasman, vice president for academics and dean of the College. “Students will tell you that she challenges them to do outstanding work.  These impeccable standards, combined with this faculty member’s outstanding leadership skills, have resulted in her academic program being recognized as one of the best in the region.”

Originally from Oceanside, NY, Dr. Leight received her bachelor of science in nursing from State University of New York at Buffalo and her master of science in nursing and doctorate of education from West Virginia University.  She was named a Postdoctoral Fellow for Psychosocial Oncology from the University of Pennsylvania.

After a one-year term in 2000 as an associate professor, Dr. Leight began her tenure at Wesleyan in 2004 after holding various teaching positions at Fairmont State University, University of Pittsburgh, and West Virginia University.  A researcher and consultant, Dr. Leight has been published multiple times and is currently working on a paper to be submitted to Oncology Nursing Forum entitled Breast Cancer Prevention and Early Detection: A review of the current evidence.  She is also the advisor for Student Nurses of Wesleyan (SNOW) and serves on the Curriculum Council, Professional Affairs Council, Curriculum Task Force, and Nominating Committees at Wesleyan, as well as a Faculty Senator.

Dr. Leight holds membership in multiple professional organizations including West Virginia Nurses’ Association/American Nurses’ Association, WVNA Advanced Practice Conference Group, Oncology Nursing Society, Southern Nursing Research Society, American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, and American Association of Nurse Practitioners.
