Spread the Love Peanut Butter Drive a Success

The fourth annual West Virginia Wesleyan College Spread the Love Peanut Butter Drive raised a total of 1,065 jars of peanut butter. Donations were provided by Wesleyan faculty, staff and students, Rotary, Literacy volunteers, Hodgesville Elementary third graders, Student Council at Union Elementary, Kesling Mill Lions Club, and Central Upshur Club.

All donations benefit the Upshur Parish House food pantry where many local families receive needed food.  One item that is a staple in food bags is peanut butter due to its nutritious value and the fact that children love it.  However, it is not an item commonly donated.  When there is no peanut butter on the food pantry shelves, supplies are replenished from the limited resources of the Parish House.  Last year, Wesleyan and the local community donated 1,096 jars of peanut butter to help alleviate food needs.

The Spread the Love Peanut Butter drive is part of the Governor's Day to Serve which began in 2012 as a collaboration between the governors of MD, VA, WV and the mayor of DC. They invited all citizens, faith groups, businesses and community organizations to join the cause. The results were overwhelming. Over 14,000 volunteers carried out 750 community service projects. They collected and donated more than 600,000 pounds of food and planted hundreds of trees.  Please visit for additional information.
