Social Justice Week 2015 Begins Monday

The WE LEAD program in the Center for Community Engagement & Leadership Development at West Virginia Wesleyan College will be hosting its annual Social Justice Week Monday, March 23 through Friday, March 27.

Social Justice Week is dedicated to education, empowerment, and activism.  The program strives to educate Wesleyan students, faculty, and the Buckhannon community about forms of injustice that occur locally and globally.  The theme for this week’s activities is based on the quotation from Lily Tomlin: “I always wondered why somebody didn’t do something about that.  Then I realized I am somebody.”  The week’s tag line is Stand Up.  Stand Strong.  Stand Together.

“We chose the theme to emphasize the important of speaking up for what you believe in and to encourage others to work together against social justice issues in our own neighborhoods and worldwide,” commented Jessica Walter, co-leader of Social Justice Week.

Monday brings the Threads of Hope Bracelet Sale, Stop Hunger Now meal packaging, and guest speaker Sarah Riley, executive director of High Rocks Educational Corporation in Randolph County.  Tuesday’s schedule includes Stand for Freedom and the Clothesline project.  Wednesday continues the Threads of Hope Sale and the Clothesline Project, but also includes the Trevor Project, a Place at the Table, and Appalachian Experience.  Thursday is host to Cardboard City, and Friday not only continues the Threads of Hope Sale, but also concludes Social Justice Week with the annual Peace Luminaries around the Chapel Oval.

“We are really excited for Social Justice Week 2015 because it provides an opportunity for each person to stand up for an issue that they are passionate about and to make a positive difference in the lives of others,” stated Walter.  Social Justice Week co-leader Jessica Walter.
