Leadingham Named 2016 Newman Civic Fellow

Mark Leadingham II, a junior mathematics major from Sharpsburg, MD, was recently named a 2016 Newman Civic Fellow by Campus Compact, a Boston-based non-profit organization working to advance the public purposes of higher education.  Two-hundred eighteen students from 36 states; Washington, D.C.; and Mexico were named.

The award honors the late Frank Newman, one of Campus Compact’s founders and a tireless advocate for the civic engagement of higher education.  In the spirit of Dr. Newman’s leadership, Campus Compact member presidents and chancellors nominate undergraduate or graduate students who are proven leaders with both the motivation and ability to make substantial contributions toward public problem solving for this special recognition.

“Being involved is second nature for me,” said Leadingham.  “I thrive on being busy and contributing in any way possible, whether it be at my home in Maryland or in my second home among the hills in West Virginia.  I latch onto the community in which I live.”

The Newman Civic Fellows will represent their higher education institution in a national group of student leaders.  These students will receive an award certificate and an invitation to join the Newman Civic Fellows online network.  They will also be featured prominently on the Campus Compact national websites and, in many cases, invited to participate in state-specific activities.

“Engagement in your surroundings is the path to living life to the fullest,” he continued.  “Through many organizations of which I am part, I have more than enough opportunities to participate on Wesleyan’s campus and in Buckhannon.  Being a Newman Civic Fellow is an honor that I could not have achieved without the resources and skills with which Wesleyan has provided me in just two short years.  I have grown in so many ways, and I could not be happier with this honor.”

Campus Compact is a non-profit coalition of nearly 1,100 college and university presidents, representing some 6 million students, who are committed to fulfilling the civic purposes of higher education.  As the only national association dedicated to this mission, Campus Compact is a leader in building community engagement into campus and academic life.
