Wesleyan Receives $50,000 from Dominion Resource and the Dominion Foundation

West Virginia Wesleyan College has been awarded a $50,000 grant from Dominion Resource and the Dominion Foundation to support laboratory equipment for the new degree program in Petroleum and Natural Gas Geophysics in the School of Science. This grant is part of Dominion’s annual commitment of $1.3 million to support educational efforts through Dominion’s Educational Partnership Program.

The grant provided funding for a Raman Spectrometer, Small Mass Spectrometer, Turbo Vacuum Pump, X-ray Spectrometer, Nuclear Radioisotope Spectrometer, and Seismometer housed in the teaching labs.

“We are thankful with the gift from Dominion Resource and the Dominion Foundation,” shared President Pamela Balch, president of the College. “This generous grant allows the department to purchase important equipment to offer hands-on learning about a fast-growing industry in petroleum and natural gas geophysics.”

“We are thrilled with the generosity of Dominion Resources,” said Dr. G. Albert “Bert” Popson, professor of physics. “The Dominion folks plan a visit this spring to talk to our students about careers and summer internships, a win-win situation for Dominion and Wesleyan. Our students and the local economy will be the ultimate winners of the Dominion-Wesleyan partnership.”

Currently, the Engineering and Physics Department has 108 majors with 15 students studying the Petroleum and Natural Gas Geophysics majors. For more information about the major, please contact the Office of Admissions at 1-800-722-9933.
