College Receives $1 Million Bequest

West Virginia Wesleyan College has received $1,090,090.15 from the Elizabeth Ward Speir Cuthbert Trust.  The gift will be added to Wesleyan’s Scholarship Fund.

Cuthbert, who passed away in 2007, was a 1933 graduate of Wesleyan.  She pursued history as her major and English as a minor and served as a vice president of Sigma Delta Chi.

“We are delighted to receive this generous bequest,” stated Wesleyan President Pamela Balch ’71.  “Elizabeth was a faithful donor to the College throughout her life, and we are grateful that she desired to establish a lasting legacy here.  Wesleyan constantly strives to offer an affordable personal educational experience, and estate gifts such as these allow us to remain accessible to many students in West Virginia and surrounding states.”

Founded in 1890, West Virginia Wesleyan is a private, residential college that is closely affiliated with The United Methodist Church.  The school offers 49 undergraduate majors and graduate programs in athletic training, business, education, English writing, and nursing.
