Scott Named Chaplain and Director of Religious and Spiritual Life

Christopher Scott has been named Chaplain and Director of Religious and Spiritual Life at West Virginia Wesleyan College.  Scott comes to Wesleyan from Meadow River United Methodist Church in Rainelle and Rupert, WV where he served as Senior Pastor.

Scott began his duties on July 6 and has begun planning the worship experience for the Wesleyan community.

“These worship services will be an eclectic mix of worship styles, featuring speakers and musicians from throughout the area,” stated Scott.  “In addition to worship services, I am excited about hosting programs and events where we can see how our faith connects to the issues and concerns facing our world today.  How can faith be a voice for positive social change?  How does faith call us into lives of faithful service to others?  I look forward to partnering with student organizations and academic departments in a variety of ways.”

One of the traditions Scott hopes to breathe new life into is the Great Gathering.

“It is a gathering to show our Wesleyan pride and to kick off the year together,” he said.  “It is a time to welcome new students to Wesleyan, as well as for returning students to reconnect with old friends.  This celebration will be on September 1 at 11 a.m. at Wesley Chapel, and it is an event you will not want to miss!”

Scott is looking forward to this new journey as he has been working hard to prepare the Religious Life office for students to return in late August.  He wants to be seen where the students are, and it will not be a surprise to see him in his mobile office around campus at the Cat’s Claw, the library, Sunny Buck’s, or anywhere else he can connect with students.

“We will have a Meet and Greet at the Office of Religious Life. Feel free to introduce yourself if you see me around campus,” stated Scott.

Overall, Scott is excited to be a part of the Wesleyan community and have a chance to worship in Wesley Chapel.

“Wesley Chapel has always been a place of reflection, prayer, and renewal for the community, and its presence and influences span far beyond the College,” he said.  “In times of struggle and in times of joy, Wesley Chapel has been a church for the whole community.  I am both joyful and humbled to be part of this proud tradition.”

Scott graduated from Eden Theological Seminary in 2012 with a Master of Divinity and from Shepherd University in 2007 with a bachelor of political science degree.  In addition to Meadow River UMC, he has pastored at Levelton UMC in West Virginia and St. Louis Mennonite Fellowship in St. Louis, MO.

“I am only beginning my journey here at Wesleyan, and I am amazed at the hospitality I have received,” commented Scott.  “I have a passion for encouraging, guiding, and challenging young adults as they engage and explore questions of life and faith.  No matter who you are or where you are on your journey, my door is open to you.”
