Bair, Carter Named 2015 Bly Scholars

John Bair and Morgan Carter of West Virginia Wesleyan College have been named the third and fourth Bly Family Scholars, receiving the 2015 Bly Family Scholarship for International Travel.

The Bly Family Scholarship Fund was established in 1991 by Suzan E. Bly ’68 in honor of her parents, Margaret and Shirley Bly, of Winchester, VA.  In 2012, the Scholarship was amended to support overseas travel.  The Bly Family Scholarship for International Studies is a permanently endowed scholarship fund intended to foster a global perspective.

Bair, a sophomore double major in music and applied physics from Shady Spring, WV will be traveling to Thailand for five weeks.  While there, Bair hopes to study Buddhism for his own personal fulfillment and absorb as much of Thailand’s culture as possible.  His bucket list includes spending time in the Buddhist Wat, letting adventure and common sense lead him through Chiang Mai, and riding an elephant.

“When I arrived at Wesleyan, the idea of studying abroad seemed intangible,” Bair said.  “Two years later, I am preparing for Thailand and am thankful that I decided to pursue this opportunity. As unlikely as it seemed, I now realize opportunity presents itself to those who are able to see and follow it.”

Carter, a junior creative writing and gender studies major from Orange, TX, will be spending two months in Pune, India.  She will travel to Mumbai, Agra, and New Dehli to see landmarks such as the Taj Mahal, the Swaminarayan Akshardam, and the Ajanta and Ellora Buddhist Caverns.

"I hope to have an integrated, fully-immersed learning experience, as well as bring back new lenses of perspectives for my studies, sharing these outlooks with others,” Carter commented.  “I am astounded and grateful at being named a Bly Scholar.  It is still unbelievable that I have been given this amazing opportunity to study abroad and have this experience.  It is something that I will take with me wherever I go.”
