What to Expect

  • Expect to be greeted courteously
  • Expect your participation to be voluntary unless your initial meeting results from a judicial or administrative sanction for a mandated assessment or program.
  • Expect the staff to make an effort to schedule appointment times so that waiting is kept to a minimum.
  • Expect the staff to direct you to the resource information or resource person you request.
  • Expect the counselor to answer your questions about his/her professional experience, training, certification, approach, and ethical responsibilities.
  • Expect to be involved in a collaborative effort. You will take an active role in determining the outcome of your experience.
  • Expect answers to your questions about strategies used and recommendations made.
  • Expect to use the first meeting to decide if you think the counselor has the potential to be helpful and trustworthy.
  • Expect the counselor to ask you questions, listen carefully, and work to understand you.
  • Expect the content of individual and group sessions to be kept confidential. Your records are available to NO ONE without your consent. In rare circumstances, like the threat of imminent danger or an emergency information can be communicated without a release.
