Do you enjoy teaching others? Can you envision yourself in front of a classroom? West Virginia Wesleyan’s School of Education is designed to prepare highly-qualified elementary and secondary classroom teachers who are active learners and decision makers. You will learn the breadth and richness of culture and a respect for the dignity, diversity, and worth of individuals. Both course work and field experiences are included in the program. Student teaching at the undergraduate level occurs during an academic semester at two different programmatic levels for six to seven weeks each.
You will be exposed to a variety of classroom experiences, mentored by certified and talented teachers, and work with a wide range of student populations in the public schools. On campus, small interactive classes and a dedicated and accessible faculty whose priorities are teaching and advising allow students to benefit from a highly personalized educational experience.
In addition to completing requirements for initial certification at the undergraduate level, teacher candidates who already possess an undergraduate degree with the equivalent of a major in a content area may seek initial certification at the master’s level through the Post-Baccalaureate Accelerated Initial Certification program.
The School of Education has produced more than ten percent of the College’s graduates over the previous five-year period. Presently, the School of Education serves 199 undergraduate education and music education majors and approximately 30 graduate candidates pursuing master’s degrees and/or additional certification.

At West Virginia Wesleyan, we seek to prepare professional elementary and secondary classroom teachers who are active learners and decision makers. Competence as entry-level teachers derives from:
- thorough preparation in teaching fields;
- mastery of professional skills appropriate to the chosen teaching level;
- an appreciation for the richness of diverse culture and the worth of individuals.
You will be provided with many opportunities for first-hand experiences working with students in your chosen teaching field. Public schools in Upshur, Lewis, Harrison, and Randolph counties provide the settings for directed observation and teaching.
Graduates who complete Wesleyan's teacher education program qualify for professional licensure in West Virginia and most other states. A few states may require limited additional work and/or testing before a candidate education out-of-state may be eligible for permanent professional licensure.
