Melanie Sal
Department Chair
Associate Professor of Biology
304-473-8034
Sal_m@wvwc.edu
B.A., Ph.D., West Virginia University
Areas of Instruction: Microbiology, Immunology, Physiology, Disease in society, Principles of Biology
Research interests: Dr. Sal’s microbiology research lab has a variety of ongoing projects. We work with the Lyme Disease spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi to investigate its biology primarily with regard to cell morphology and nutritional requirements. Dr. Sal also teaches in conjunction with Small World Initiative, a global crowd sourcing classroom project in which students examine potential antimicrobial activity in soil bacteria. For students who are interested, Dr. Sal extends that classroom project into the research lab to continue the search for the next novel antibiotic.
